Overview

This session teaches a structured forty-five-minute triage for a workbook you did not build. Attendees learn to inventory external dependencies, find hard-coded assumptions buried inside formulas, map the path from inputs to reported outputs, identify which formulas are most likely to break, and leave with a prioritized repair plan. The goal is not to make the workbook perfect. It is to make it safe to use and safe to change.

Why you should Attend

You cannot defend a number produced by a file you do not understand, and you cannot safely change what you have not mapped. Most inherited workbooks fail quietly: a broken external link returns a stale value, a hard-coded override sits inside an otherwise correct formula, and the error propagates for months before anyone notices. The first hour with an unfamiliar workbook decides whether you control it or it controls you.

Areas Covered in the Session

  • The T.R.I.A.G.E. framework: Trace external links, Reveal hard-coded assumptions, Inventory inputs to outputs, Assess fragile formulas, Grade what breaks first, Establish the repair plan
  • The first ten minutes: a structured walk-through that tells you what kind of workbook you have inherited
  • Finding every external link, broken reference, and stale connection before you trust a single output
  • Using Go To Special and Formula Auditing to separate genuine inputs from constants hidden inside formulas
  • Mapping the calculation chain - from raw inputs through intermediate logic to the numbers that get reported
  • The fragility inventory: volatile functions, hard-coded ranges, merged cells, manual calculation mode, and formulas that reference other people's files
  • Grading risk honestly: what would produce a wrong answer silently versus what would simply produce an error
  • Writing the repair plan - what to fix now, what to document and leave alone, and what to rebuild rather than patch
  • Documenting the workbook so the next person does not repeat this session
