Overview

VAWA affects many parts of HUD Multifamily operations, from applicant screening and move-in through lease enforcement, emergency transfers, and termination actions. Housing providers must understand who receives protection, which adverse factors may be directly related to VAWA violence or abuse, and when additional documentation may be requested.

This session reviews the core VAWA requirements that apply to covered HUD Multifamily housing and explains how staff should respond when an applicant or tenant requests protection. Participants will examine HUD's updated VAWA forms, required distribution practices, confidentiality standards, emergency transfer procedures, and record-retention requirements. The session will also address the limited intersection between VAWA and HOTMA's real-property restriction. Practical examples will help participants distinguish required actions from recommended practices and avoid common compliance mistakes.

Why you should Attend

VAWA compliance requires more than placing the correct forms in a tenant file. Staff must recognize when an adverse factor may be directly related to VAWA violence or abuse, know what documentation they may request, protect confidential information, and correctly process emergency transfer requests. A well-intentioned but improper response can expose a survivor to additional risk while creating serious fair housing and compliance concerns for the property. This session will help participants understand the requirements and apply them consistently in real situations.
