Which Projects Should Survive? A Transparent Portfolio Decision Model

Overview

This session builds a weighted portfolio decision model that is transparent enough to survive an executive challenge. Attendees learn to set criteria and weights before seeing the candidate list, apply minimum thresholds and hard constraints, carry confidence ratings alongside scores, and stress-test the ranking with sensitivity analysis. The most valuable output is often the discovery that two initiatives are genuinely tied - and that the choice between them is a judgment call, not a calculation.

A ranking that cannot be explained will not be defended, and a ranking that cannot be defended gets overturned in the hallway after the meeting. Worse is the ranking that looks rigorous but rests on a scoring difference smaller than the noise in the estimates - a model that produces false confidence is more dangerous than no model at all.
